Hampton Downs Motorsport Park was conceived in the early 2000s and officially opened in 2010, representing a significant investment in New Zealand's motorsport infrastructure. The circuit was developed by motorsport enthusiasts Tony Roberts and Chris Watson, who envisioned creating a world-class facility to elevate New Zealand's racing profile internationally. In 2015, the track underwent a significant ownership change when it was acquired by Australian motorsport icon Tony Quinn, who implemented substantial upgrades including the extension to the international-length circuit. Throughout its operation, Hampton Downs has hosted prestigious events including rounds of the Australian GT Championship, New Zealand Touring Car Championship, and the annual New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing. The circuit has also been instrumental in developing young driving talent through its motorsport academy programs and regular track day opportunities.
