Description

Overview

The Lausitzring, also known as EuroSpeedway Lausitz, is a versatile motorsport venue located near Klettwitz in eastern Germany, approximately 130 kilometers south of Berlin. This modern racing facility features a unique combination of an oval speedway and various road course configurations, making it one of Europe's most diverse racing venues. Set against the backdrop of the scenic Lausitz region, the circuit attracts motorsport enthusiasts from across Europe with its technical challenges and excellent spectator viewing areas. The facility spans approximately 367 hectares and offers multiple track layouts to accommodate different racing disciplines, from touring cars to motorcycles.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The Lausitzring boasts an impressive 3.2-kilometer tri-oval speedway with 8.5-degree banking in the turns, one of only a few European circuits with NASCAR-style oval capabilities. The road course measures 4.534 kilometers in its longest configuration, with 14 challenging turns that test drivers' technical skills. The circuit features a mix of fast straights, including a main straight of approximately 900 meters where vehicles can reach speeds of over 280 km/h, and tight technical sections that demand precise braking and acceleration. The track surface is known for its excellent grip in both dry and wet conditions, having been resurfaced several times since its opening. Multiple configuration options allow organizers to utilize shorter variants, including a 3.442-kilometer GP circuit and a 2.0-kilometer short course for testing and club racing events.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Lausitzring offers comprehensive facilities that make it a premier destination for both competitors and spectators. The main grandstand accommodates up to 25,000 spectators, with a total venue capacity of approximately 120,000 across various viewing areas. The paddock area features modern garages equipped with advanced technical equipment, while the race control tower houses sophisticated timing and monitoring systems. Beyond racing, the complex includes specialized areas such as a dynamic driving center used for automotive testing and driver training, off-road sections for SUV and truck demonstrations, and skid pads for safety training. The circuit also maintains dedicated media facilities, VIP hospitality areas, and a central event center that hosts conferences and exhibitions throughout the year. Since 2018, the facility has been further enhanced as a testing ground for autonomous vehicle technology, reflecting its evolution beyond traditional motorsport.

History

The Lausitzring was built on the site of a former open-cast lignite mine, representing a significant reclamation project in the post-reunification era of Germany. Construction began in 1998, and the circuit officially opened in 2000, hosting its first major event with the German 500 CART Championship race. The venue has since welcomed prestigious series including DTM (German Touring Car Championship), ADAC GT Masters, World Superbike Championship, and various truck racing competitions. In 2003, the circuit experienced tragedy when former Formula One driver Michele Alboreto lost his life during testing. After facing financial challenges, the facility was acquired by DEKRA in 2017, transforming it into Europe's largest independent test center for autonomous and connected driving while maintaining its racing heritage. Today, the Lausitzring continues to balance its dual identity as both a competitive racing venue and an automotive technology testing facility, securing its place in European motorsport history.
