Pacific Raceways is a versatile motorsports facility located in Kent, Washington, about 20 miles south of Seattle. Nestled in the picturesque Pacific Northwest, this multi-purpose racing venue spans 320 acres and features a challenging 2.25-mile road course with 10 turns, a quarter-mile NHRA-sanctioned drag strip, and various specialized racing areas. The track's unique setting among towering evergreen trees creates a distinctive racing experience that combines technical driving challenges with natural beauty, making it one of the most scenic racetracks in North America.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The 2.25-mile road course at Pacific Raceways offers drivers a thrilling combination of high-speed straights and technical corners. The track's signature feature is the 3/4-mile main straight where vehicles can reach speeds exceeding 160 mph before encountering the challenging braking zone of Turn 1. The circuit incorporates significant elevation changes of over 125 feet throughout the lap, adding complexity to driving lines and strategy. Turn 2, known as "The Carousel," is a long, sweeping right-hander that tests driver commitment, while the technical back section winds through the forest with a series of interconnected corners that reward precision. The track surface was repaved in sections during recent renovations, improving grip while maintaining the circuit's characteristic challenges.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Beyond the main road course, Pacific Raceways houses several specialized racing facilities. The NHRA-sanctioned drag strip hosts national events including the NHRA Northwest Nationals, drawing top competitors in the drag racing world. The venue features multiple paddock areas with power hookups, a professional timing system, and grandstand seating for spectators with excellent sightlines of both the road course and drag strip. The facility also includes a karting track, driving schools, and areas for autocross competitions. Recent improvements include enhanced concession areas, modernized restroom facilities, and upgraded tech inspection stations. The track's proximity to Seattle makes it accessible while still providing the space needed for comprehensive motorsports activities.

History

Pacific Raceways opened in 1960 as Seattle International Raceway and has played a significant role in Northwest motorsports for over six decades. Originally built as a road racing circuit, the facility added the drag strip in the early 1970s to diversify its racing program. Throughout its history, the track has hosted numerous significant events, including SCCA Trans-Am races, IMSA competitions, and Formula Atlantic championships. NASCAR Northwest Tour events were regular fixtures at the circuit during the 1980s and 1990s. In 1999, the facility was renamed Pacific Raceways under new ownership that began a series of modernization efforts. Today, while maintaining its historic character, the venue continues to evolve with plans for expanded facilities including a motorsports industrial park that would further cement its position as the premier racing destination in the Pacific Northwest.
