Description

Overview

The Schleizer Dreieck, often referred to as the "Schleiz Triangle," is Germany's oldest natural road racing circuit, situated in the scenic countryside near the town of Schleiz in Thuringia. This historic 3.8-kilometer (2.36-mile) circuit combines challenging technical sections with high-speed straights, creating an exciting venue for motorcycle and car racing enthusiasts. Known for its natural elevation changes and flowing layout that follows the contours of the landscape, Schleizer Dreieck offers drivers and riders a pure racing experience that has stood the test of time since its inception in the early 20th century.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

Schleizer Dreieck's layout features a distinctive triangular shape that gives the circuit its name. The track includes several technical highlights, including the challenging Seng curve, a tight right-hander that tests late braking skills, and the fast-flowing Buchhübel section where vehicles can reach impressive speeds. With 9 demanding corners ranging from hairpins to sweeping bends and elevation changes of up to 23 meters throughout the lap, the circuit demands complete concentration and technical prowess. The main straight allows vehicles to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h before heavy braking into the first corner, creating excellent overtaking opportunities. The track surface, while modernized over the years, retains some of the characteristic bumps that add to the circuit's unique challenge.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

The facility has been modernized while maintaining its historic character, featuring permanent grandstands with seating for approximately 15,000 spectators along with natural viewing areas that can accommodate up to 50,000 visitors on major race weekends. The paddock area provides teams with essential amenities including power connections, water supply, and technical service areas. A modern race control tower equipped with comprehensive timing systems and track surveillance ensures safety standards are maintained throughout events. Additional facilities include hospitality areas, food concessions, and dedicated parking for both competitors and spectators. The circuit also maintains a small museum displaying artifacts and photographs documenting its rich racing heritage.

History

Racing at Schleizer Dreieck began in 1923, making it one of the oldest continuously used racing venues in Germany. Initially a street circuit using public roads, the track gained prominence in the 1950s when it hosted international motorcycle races that drew competitors from across Europe. During the GDR era, the circuit was a centerpiece of East German motorsport, hosting rounds of the prestigious "Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt" motorcycle races. After German reunification, the track underwent significant safety upgrades while preserving its traditional character. Today, Schleizer Dreieck continues to host the IDM (International German Motorcycle Championship) and various historic racing events, cementing its place in German motorsport culture as a living monument to racing history that connects generations of motorsport enthusiasts.
