Overview

Buriram International Circuit, officially known as Chang International Circuit, is Thailand's premier motorsport venue located in Buriram Province, approximately 410 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. This world-class facility spans over 470 acres and features a FIA Grade 1 and FIM Grade A certified racing circuit, capable of hosting prestigious international events including Formula 1 and MotoGP. The track's design combines technical challenges with high-speed sections, making it a favorite among drivers and riders while offering spectators excellent viewing opportunities across its modern facilities.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The 4.554-kilometer (2.83-mile) circuit features 12 challenging turns with a layout designed by renowned German architect Hermann Tilke. The track width ranges from 12 to 16 meters, providing ample space for overtaking maneuvers. Its longest straight extends 1 kilometer, allowing vehicles to reach impressive speeds before a heavy braking zone into Turn 3. The circuit's most distinctive features include a technical first sector with a sweeping right-hander, a high-speed middle section, and a technical final sector that tests drivers' precision. The layout incorporates both clockwise direction running and elevation changes that add to the driving challenge while the asphalt composition provides excellent grip in varying weather conditions.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Chang International Circuit boasts state-of-the-art facilities including a main grandstand with capacity for 50,000 spectators and total event accommodation for up to 100,000 visitors. The paddock area features modern pit buildings with 30 fully-equipped garages, hospitality suites, media center, and medical facilities. For teams and participants, the circuit offers specialized areas including private testing zones, driving schools, and advanced timing systems. Spectators benefit from multiple grandstands with excellent track visibility, fan zones with entertainment activities, diverse food and beverage options, and dedicated parking areas. The venue's infrastructure includes helipads, VIP lounges, and comprehensive support services making it a complete motorsport destination.

History

Opened in October 2014, Chang International Circuit represents Thailand's commitment to international motorsport. The facility was built with an investment of approximately $60 million by Newin Chidchob and named after its primary sponsor, Chang Beer. The circuit made history when it hosted its first major international event, the World Superbike Championship, in March 2015. Its most significant achievement came in 2018 when it successfully hosted Thailand's first MotoGP event, drawing over 220,000 spectators across the race weekend. Since then, the circuit has become a regular fixture on the MotoGP calendar and has hosted numerous national and international racing series including Super GT, TCR Asia, and Asian Le Mans Series. The venue has played a crucial role in developing motorsport culture in Thailand and establishing the country's presence in global racing.
