Description

Overview

Karlskoga Motorstadion, also known as Gelleråsen Arena, is Sweden's oldest permanent race track, nestled in the picturesque forests of Värmland, approximately 2 hours west of Stockholm. Spanning 2.4 kilometers (1.49 miles) of challenging asphalt, this historic circuit combines technical corners with moderate straights, making it a favorite among Nordic motorsport enthusiasts. The track's natural setting provides excellent viewing points for spectators while challenging drivers with its undulating terrain and varied corner sequences.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The Karlskoga circuit features a counter-clockwise layout with 11 corners that blend slow technical sections with faster sweeping bends. The track width ranges between 10-12 meters, providing ample space for overtaking while maintaining a competitive challenge. The main straight allows speeds approaching 200 km/h before entering a demanding braking zone at Turn 1. A notable characteristic is the elevation changes throughout the lap, with the most significant being the downhill approach to the hairpin at Turn 7. The circuit's surface has been regularly updated, ensuring good grip levels while preserving the traditional flow that has tested drivers since its inception.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

The venue boasts modern amenities including a recently renovated paddock area with permanent garages, comprehensive timing systems, and professional safety installations meeting FIA standards. The main grandstand overlooks the start-finish straight, while natural embankments around the circuit create an amphitheater-like viewing experience. Beyond racing, Karlskoga Motorstadion houses a driving academy, conference facilities, and a restaurant offering panoramic views of the action. The pit complex can accommodate various racing categories from touring cars to motorcycles, making it a versatile motorsport venue hosting approximately 200 event days annually, including race weekends, track days, and corporate events.

History

Established in 1950, Karlskoga Motorstadion holds the distinction of being Sweden's first permanent motor racing circuit. Throughout its storied history, the track has hosted everything from national championships to international racing series, including visits from Formula Three and the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship. Racing legends like Ronnie Peterson and Stirling Moss have competed here, adding to its rich motorsport heritage. The circuit underwent significant modernization in the early 2000s and again in 2015, enhancing facilities while carefully preserving the character that has made it a cornerstone of Scandinavian motorsport for over seven decades. Today, it continues as a living monument to Swedish racing tradition while embracing modern motorsport demands.
