Overview

Moscow Raceway stands as Russia's premier motorsport facility, situated approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Moscow in the Volokolamsky District. This world-class circuit offers a challenging mix of technical sections and high-speed straights, making it a versatile venue for various motorsport disciplines. Designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke, Moscow Raceway meets the highest international standards and has hosted prestigious series including World Superbike Championship, DTM, and World Series by Renault since its inauguration in 2012.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The Moscow Raceway boasts multiple configuration options, with its full Grand Prix layout measuring 4.070 kilometers (2.53 miles) with 17 turns. The circuit features a notable 873-meter main straight where vehicles can reach impressive top speeds before hard braking into the first corner complex. The track width varies between 12 and 15 meters, providing ample space for overtaking maneuvers. Its anti-clockwise direction includes a diverse mix of slow technical sections, medium-speed corners, and fast sweepers that test drivers' skills across different driving techniques. The elevation changes throughout the circuit add another layer of complexity, with a maximum gradient of approximately 2%.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Beyond the track itself, Moscow Raceway offers comprehensive facilities that cater to teams, spectators, and media alike. The circuit features a modern paddock area with fully-equipped garages and technical spaces. Spectator capacity reaches approximately 50,000, with covered grandstands providing excellent viewing opportunities around key sections of the track. The venue includes VIP hospitality areas, a media center, medical facilities, and dedicated parking zones. For driver training and smaller events, the complex incorporates a separate karting track and a driving academy. The facility's infrastructure supports year-round operation with appropriate weatherproofing for Russia's varied climate conditions.

History

Moscow Raceway made history when it opened in July 2012 as Russia's first purpose-built FIA-certified racing circuit. The project represented a significant milestone in Russian motorsport development, bringing world-class racing infrastructure to the country. Construction began in 2008 after years of planning, with an investment of approximately €150 million. The circuit received its FIA Grade 1 license in 2012, allowing it to host Formula One testing sessions, though it has not yet held an F1 Grand Prix. Over its first decade, Moscow Raceway has played a crucial role in developing motorsport culture in Russia, hosting international competitions while nurturing domestic racing series and driver development programs. The facility continues to evolve with ongoing improvements to enhance the racing experience for competitors and spectators alike.
