Description
Overview
Zhuhai International Circuit (ZIC) is China's first permanent motor racing track, situated in the southern city of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, near the border with Macau. Spanning 4.3 kilometers (2.67 miles), this FIA Grade II circuit combines technical challenges with high-speed sections, making it a significant motorsport venue in Asia. The track is known for its unique setting, surrounded by hills on one side and offering glimpses of the South China Sea on the other, creating a distinctive atmosphere for racing enthusiasts.
Technical Specifications and Track Features
The Zhuhai circuit features a clockwise layout with 14 turns and a notable 1.2-kilometer main straight that provides excellent overtaking opportunities. The track width varies between 12-15 meters, offering ample space for competitive racing. The layout includes a mix of slow technical corners, medium-speed bends, and high-speed straights that test drivers' technical abilities and courage. Turn 1, a tight right-hander following the main straight, is particularly challenging and has been the scene of many race-defining moments. The circuit's elevation changes, though subtle, add another dimension to the driving experience, with the track's surface offering good grip under various weather conditions.
Facilities and Specialized Areas
The circuit complex includes comprehensive facilities that cater to teams, spectators, and media. A modern pit building houses 24 garages, race control, and timing facilities. The paddock area provides ample space for teams and support services. For spectators, there are grandstands along the main straight and viewing areas at key corners. The circuit also features a driving school, conference facilities, and a karting track, making it a versatile motorsport center. Technical facilities include advanced timing systems, safety barriers meeting international standards, and extensive runoff areas designed to maximize driver safety while maintaining the circuit's challenging nature.
History
Inaugurated in 1996, Zhuhai International Circuit marked China's entry into the world of permanent racing facilities. The circuit was designed by the renowned Kinhill Engineers of Australia, with input from racing drivers to ensure it would be both technically challenging and enjoyable to drive. In its early years, ZIC hosted significant international events, including the BPR Global GT Series and later FIA GT Championship races. While it was initially considered for Formula One, the Chinese Grand Prix eventually went to Shanghai International Circuit. Nevertheless, Zhuhai has established itself as a cornerstone of Asian motorsport, regularly hosting the Asian Le Mans Series, China Touring Car Championship, and various motorcycle racing events. The circuit has played a crucial role in developing motorsport culture in China and continues to be an important venue for both domestic and international competitions.
