Overview

Goodwood Motor Circuit is a celebrated motorsport venue situated on the Goodwood Estate near Chichester in West Sussex, England. This historic 2.4-mile (3.8 km) circuit is known for its challenging layout that retains its original character from the post-war era. The track is renowned for hosting the annual Goodwood Revival, which celebrates vintage motorsport and the circuit's golden era between 1948 and 1966. Its picturesque setting against the backdrop of the South Downs creates a quintessentially British motorsport experience that attracts enthusiasts from around the world.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The track features a distinctive perimeter layout following the outline of the former RAF Westhampnett airfield, with sweeping corners and challenging high-speed sections. Notable features include the daunting St. Mary's corner, the technical Lavant complex, and the famous Woodcote corner that leads onto the start/finish straight. The circuit's surface and layout remain largely unchanged since its heyday, offering drivers an authentic experience of racing as it was in the mid-20th century. The configuration demands precision driving with little margin for error, as the track is bordered by traditional grass verges and minimal run-off areas, preserving its period-correct character.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Goodwood boasts exceptional facilities that balance historic charm with modern amenities. The pit lane and paddock areas retain their period appearance while offering contemporary conveniences for teams and competitors. The circuit features excellent spectator viewing areas, including grandstands and natural banking that provide exceptional sightlines. The Goodwood Aerodrome continues to operate alongside the circuit, reinforcing the venue's aviation heritage. The Motor Circuit also houses the Goodwood Driving Academy, offering various driving experiences on this historic track, from performance driving courses to corporate events.

History

Originally built as the perimeter track for RAF Westhampnett, an auxiliary airfield during World War II, Goodwood Circuit began its racing history in 1948 when the 9th Duke of Richmond opened it as a motor racing venue. Throughout its initial active period until 1966, it hosted significant events including non-championship Formula One races and the famous Tourist Trophy sports car races. After closing to competitive motorsport for over 30 years, the circuit was meticulously restored and reopened in 1998 with the inaugural Goodwood Revival meeting. The Revival has since become one of the world's premier historic motorsport events, featuring period vehicles from the circuit's active years and participants in period dress, creating an immersive step back in time. Today, Goodwood continues to celebrate motorsport heritage while making its own history through events like the Members' Meeting and Festival of Speed held on the estate's hillclimb course.
