Description

Overview

Thruxton Circuit stands as the UK's fastest racing venue, located near Andover in Hampshire, England. This high-speed 2.356-mile (3.793 km) circuit challenges drivers with its flowing layout and minimal heavy braking zones, making it a true test of courage and skill. Known for producing spectacular racing across multiple disciplines, Thruxton hosts major events including the British Touring Car Championship and British Superbike Championship. Its unique character emphasizes maintaining momentum through fast sweeping corners rather than heavy braking and acceleration, setting it apart from many modern circuits.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The circuit features a distinctive layout with an abundance of high-speed corners, including the famous Church Corner—one of the fastest in British motorsport. Drivers approach this right-hander at speeds exceeding 130mph, requiring exceptional commitment. The track's surface provides excellent grip in dry conditions but can be particularly challenging when wet due to its high-speed nature. Thruxton's configuration includes notable sections like the Complex, a technical sequence of corners following the start/finish straight, and the challenging chicane at the Club Corner which provides one of the few heavy braking zones. With average speeds among the highest of any UK circuit, teams must optimize aerodynamic efficiency while ensuring sufficient cooling for engines and brakes that operate under sustained stress.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Thruxton boasts comprehensive facilities for competitors and spectators alike. The Thruxton Centre, a modern two-story hospitality building, offers panoramic views of the circuit alongside conference facilities and a restaurant. The venue features dedicated skid pan and wet grip areas, utilized by the Thruxton Racing School which provides driving experiences in various vehicles from supercars to racing machinery. The circuit maintains separate tracks for karting and off-road experiences, making it a versatile motorsport complex. Spectator facilities include multiple grandstands and viewing banks around the circuit that provide excellent vantage points, particularly at the Complex and Club chicane where most overtaking occurs. The paddock area accommodates teams across various racing categories with professional-grade infrastructure.

History

Established on a former World War II airfield, Thruxton began hosting motorsport events in 1950 on a temporary track laid out on the runways. The permanent circuit was inaugurated in its current configuration in 1968, maintaining elements of the airfield's perimeter track. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it hosted Formula 2 and Formula 3000 races, contributing significantly to its prestigious reputation. Notable champions who honed their skills at Thruxton include Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, and Jenson Button. Despite its historical significance, the circuit has maintained its essential character while implementing modern safety features to meet contemporary standards. Today, Thruxton continues its tradition as a high-speed motorsport venue while functioning as an active airfield, with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance maintaining a base on site—a fitting connection to its aviation heritage.
