Nestled in the picturesque Norfolk countryside, Snetterton Circuit stands as one of the UK's most challenging and diverse motorsport venues. Located near the village of Snetterton, approximately 20 miles southwest of Norwich, this renowned racing circuit combines high-speed straights with technical corners, creating an exhilarating experience for drivers and spectators alike. The circuit's versatile layout makes it suitable for a wide range of motorsport activities, from British Touring Car Championship races to track days for enthusiasts. With its accessible location off the A11, Snetterton has become a cornerstone of British motorsport culture, attracting racing fans throughout the year.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

Snetterton Circuit now primarily operates in its 300 configuration, measuring 2.97 miles (4.78 km) in length. This layout includes three distinctive variants—the 300, 200, and 100 circuits—offering flexibility for different racing categories and events. The track features 12 corners in its full configuration, with the famous Riches corner providing a high-speed challenge as drivers enter from the Senna Straight. The technical infield section contrasts with two long straights that allow speeds exceeding 150 mph in suitable machinery. The Bentley Straight and the back section present prime overtaking opportunities, while the complex Montreal hairpin tests drivers' braking and acceleration skills. The circuit's relatively flat topography, with subtle elevation changes, requires precise car setup and rewards technical driving excellence.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

The circuit boasts comprehensive facilities to support a wide spectrum of motorsport activities. Modern pit garages, hospitality suites, and grandstands provide excellent accommodation for teams and spectators. The paddock area offers ample space for competitors, with dedicated technical and scrutineering bays. Beyond racing, Snetterton features specialized areas including a skid pan for driver training, and multiple event spaces that host everything from manufacturer track days to corporate events. The circuit's layout allows spectators exceptional viewing opportunities, with multiple vantage points offering clear sightlines across different sections of the track. The main spectator areas include raised banking and dedicated fan zones equipped with commentary systems, food outlets, and merchandise stalls, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

History

Snetterton's rich history began as RAF Snetterton Heath, a World War II airfield that served as a base for the United States Army Air Force's 96th Bombardment Group. Following the war, the redundant airfield was transformed into a racing circuit in 1951, utilizing the former runway infrastructure. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Snetterton established itself as a key venue in British motorsport, hosting Formula Two and Formula Three races that helped launch the careers of many Formula One stars. The circuit underwent a significant redevelopment in 2011 under the ownership of MotorSport Vision (MSV), transforming the original 1.95-mile track into the current 300 configuration. This modernization preserved the venue's character while meeting contemporary safety standards and spectator expectations. Today, Snetterton continues to evolve, honoring its aviation heritage while serving as a vital component of the UK's motorsport infrastructure.
