Sydney Motorsport Park (formerly known as Eastern Creek Raceway) is a world-class motorsport facility located in Eastern Creek, approximately 40 kilometers west of Sydney's central business district. This versatile racing complex spans 92 hectares and features multiple circuit configurations to accommodate various racing disciplines. As New South Wales' premier motorsport venue, the track hosts numerous national and international events throughout the year, including Supercars Championship rounds, motorcycle competitions, and endurance races. The facility's strategic location, comprehensive infrastructure, and challenging layout make it a favorite among drivers, teams, and spectators alike.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The main circuit at Sydney Motorsport Park is 3.93 kilometers in length and includes 18 corners with a combination of high-speed straights, technical sections, and elevation changes. The track can be configured in four distinct layouts:

The Gardner GP Circuit (3.93km) offers the full racing experience with its challenging mix of corners and a 1.2km main straight where vehicles can reach speeds exceeding 300 km/h. The Druitt Circuit (2.8km) provides a shorter configuration focusing on the northern section. The Amaroo Circuit (1.8km) utilizes the southern portion of the track for club-level events and driver training. The Brabham Circuit (4.5km) incorporates an additional section to create the longest configuration.

With a track width of 12 meters throughout and FIA Grade 2 certification, Sydney Motorsport Park meets international safety and competition standards. The circuit features significant elevation changes of up to 43 meters, creating a technically demanding driving experience with its combination of blind crests, off-camber corners, and challenging braking zones.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Sydney Motorsport Park offers comprehensive facilities to support motorsport activities at all levels. The venue features permanent pit buildings with 32 garages, a race control tower with state-of-the-art timing systems, and dedicated medical facilities. The main grandstand and several viewing areas provide excellent vantage points for spectators to enjoy the racing action.

The complex includes specialized areas such as a dedicated skid pan for driver training and vehicle testing, a full-service karting center, and the Sydney Premier Karting Park. For nighttime events, the circuit is equipped with an advanced LED lighting system installed in 2020, making it Australia's first permanent racetrack capable of hosting world-class night racing.

Supporting infrastructure includes multiple paddock areas, hospitality suites, meeting rooms, and media facilities. The Australian Racing Drivers' Club (ARDC), which manages the venue, ensures professional operations for events ranging from international competitions to corporate track days and private testing sessions.

History

Sydney Motorsport Park opened in 1990 as Eastern Creek International Raceway to replace the aging Amaroo Park circuit. The track quickly established itself by hosting the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from 1991 to 1996 and the Australian round of the World Superbike Championship from 1991 to 2008.

In 2012, the facility underwent a significant rebrand to Sydney Motorsport Park following extensive renovations. A major development phase completed in 2012 included track reconfiguration to create the multiple circuit layouts used today. Further upgrades in 2020 saw the installation of the permanent lighting system, enhancing the venue's capabilities and allowing for the popular Supercars night racing events.

Throughout its history, Sydney Motorsport Park has played a crucial role in Australian motorsport, providing a home for driver development programs, manufacturer testing, and iconic racing moments. The circuit continues to evolve with ongoing investments to maintain its status as one of Australia's premier motorsport destinations.
