Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course stands as one of America's most challenging and technical road racing circuits. Located near Lexington, Ohio, this 2.4-mile (3.86 km) road course features 15 turns and dramatic elevation changes that test driver skill and vehicle handling. Known for its park-like setting amidst rolling countryside, Mid-Ohio combines natural beauty with racing excitement. The track hosts major motorsport events including IndyCar, IMSA sports car racing, and numerous motorcycle competitions, drawing racing enthusiasts from across the Midwest and beyond.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The track configuration presents a compelling mix of technical corners and brief straightaways. Its signature elements include the challenging "Keyhole" turn—a tight 180-degree right-hander that leads onto the back straight—and the demanding "Carousel" that tests chassis setup and driver precision. The course's natural terrain layout incorporates over 140 feet of elevation changes throughout the lap, with blind crests and off-camber corners that reward precise driving. The track surface offers excellent grip in dry conditions but becomes notoriously slippery when wet, adding another layer of complexity for competitors. Multiple configuration options allow the circuit to be run in different layouts depending on the event requirements.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

Mid-Ohio features comprehensive facilities for teams, spectators, and media. The paddock area provides ample space for race operations, while multiple grandstands and natural viewing areas offer excellent sightlines across the undulating terrain. The facility includes a 0.6-mile karting circuit, providing entry-level racing opportunities. The Mid-Ohio School operates on site, offering performance driving and motorcycle riding courses that utilize specialized wet-pavement training areas. Camping facilities surrounding the track create a festival atmosphere during major race weekends, with many spectators enjoying the events from wooded hillsides that provide natural amphitheater viewing of multiple corners simultaneously.

History

Opening in 1962 as the dream of Les Griebling, Mid-Ohio quickly established itself as a premier venue for road racing in America. The track underwent significant renovations after being purchased by Jim Trueman (founder of Red Roof Inn) in 1981, who improved safety features and facilities while preserving the circuit's challenging character. Since 1982, the track has been a mainstay on the IndyCar calendar, with memorable races that have helped define championship seasons. In 2011, Green Savoree Racing Promotions acquired the facility and has continued investing in infrastructure improvements. Throughout its history, Mid-Ohio has maintained its reputation as a driver's track—one that rewards technical skill and precision rather than pure horsepower, making it a favorite among racing purists and a true benchmark of driving ability in American motorsport.
