Technical Specifications and Track Features

Thunderhill's main attraction is its flexible track layout that can be configured in multiple ways. The original 3-mile East Course features 15 turns with significant elevation changes and a mix of technical corners and high-speed straights. The newer 2-mile West Course, added in 2014, offers 10 additional turns with its own unique challenges. When combined, they create the remarkable "Thunderhill 5" – a 5-mile course that stands as one of the longest road racing tracks in America. The circuit's surface provides excellent grip in various weather conditions, while strategically placed gravel traps and runoff areas enhance safety. The track's diverse corner types include the challenging "Cyclone" turn, high-speed esses, and several blind crests that reward driver commitment and precision.

History

Established in 1993 by the San Francisco Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Thunderhill Raceway Park was designed to provide a dedicated racing facility for club events and driver education. The original 1.9-mile layout was expanded to 3 miles in 2000 as the track's popularity grew. In 2014, the facility underwent its most significant expansion with the addition of the West Course, doubling the available racing surface. Throughout its history, Thunderhill has hosted numerous notable events, including the famous "25 Hours of Thunderhill" endurance race – the longest sports car race in North America, which tests both machine and human endurance through day and night conditions. From humble beginnings, Thunderhill has evolved into a premier motorsports destination that continues to invest in improvements while maintaining its reputation for excellent track conditions and friendly atmosphere.
