Overview

Monticello Motor Club is a private automotive country club near Monticello, New York, in the Catskill Mountains. It was built on the site of the former Monticello Airport and opened in July 2008. Members drive the circuit, race in the club's in-house series and take part in coaching, karting and off-road programmes, and the circuit also hosts outside high-performance driving events. The club is owned by the Queally family, whose chairman Paul Queally bought the property with partners.

Technical Specifications and Track Features

The facility has 4.1 miles of race-grade asphalt. Its Full Course is 3.6 miles long with 20 turns and 450 feet of elevation change, and it includes more than 1.5 miles of straights. The network can also operate as three independent circuits. Many corners carry names. The opening complex, Montreal, borrows its name from the first corners of the Montreal Grand Prix circuit and pairs a hard-braking left with a tightening right-hand hairpin. Carousel is a banked, uphill 180-degree bend, the Kink is taken flat out downhill before an uphill braking zone, and Switchback is a right-left-right over a crest. Kryptos, a blind left-right over a crest, is followed by a hairpin with a banked uphill exit. Todd Lamb set the circuit's lap record of 2 minutes 39.056 seconds in a Mazda MX-5 during the MX-5 Cup round in 2018.

Facilities and Specialized Areas

The club house and race track share one site on Cantrell Road. Membership comes in Silver, Gold, Junior and Family tiers, and the club runs five in-house racing series. The Member Challenge has been held every year since 2008, with seven race weekends and two races each Saturday across several classes. The ND2 Championship uses homologated cars built by Flis Motorsports, and the Queally Mazda Classic is reserved for Miatas. Alongside the circuit the club offers go-karting and off-road driving, and its programmes include a high-performance driving school, a teen race camp, team challenges, private instruction and a karting camp, with the facility also available for rental.

History

The circuit was designed by Brian Redman with Bruce Hawkins, an engineer with PS&S, the firm behind Virginia International Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park. The Town of Thompson approved the site plan for what was then called the Drive and Race Club in May 2006. Founding members began using the club in 2007, when professional drivers including Nick Longhi reviewed the track and improved several sections, and the club took the name Monticello Motor Club in 2008. In May 2010 the club submitted a bid to host a Formula One race under a ten-year agreement from 2012, but the event went to Circuit of the Americas in Texas.
